HS Junior Jamie Chandler of GA Takes Down Women's Burrito Mile WR!

BY: ANDY CARR, Atlanta Track Club/MILTON HS TRACK DISTANCE COACH

Jamie Chandler, Milton High School girl’s junior track team captain, ate her burrito (1.2 lbs) in 2:03 and then ran a 6:09.9 mile to set a new women’s WR for the Burrito Mile in 8:12.9. The time broke the old record by 9.1 seconds!

It was a clear and dry day, low 70’s and no wind.  Jamie began eating a full 36 seconds ahead of male challenger, junior Mitchell Foley as the inter-squad relay of 400m legs (19 legs) finished as the anchor runners on each of the 2 teams ran with the burrito on their final leg and then delivered the burritos to the consumption zone and the waiting burrathletes.  Mitchell, already starting behind, ate his burrito in 2:18 knowing his superior mile time might be enough to catch Jamie.  As the mile progressed Jamie began to slow and Mitchell was gaining ground with every step! Jamie entered the final stretch with about a 10 second lead and Mitchell bore down but came up just short of catching Jamie and Jamie’s relay team, Team Licious was victorious by a scant 3.2 seconds after 9200 meters (5.75 miles) of racing!  Mitchell’s mile of 5:22.4 was his second fastest mile of his track season but was not enough for his team, Team Squirtel, to be victorious.
