Bethesda Burrito Mile Returns February 21, 2009
What? The Burrito Mile? Yep, that's right folks, your favorite track meet of the winter season (because we all know how boring the Sportsplex is) appears to be right around the corner yet again! This year's event is shaping up to be better than ever, with more burritos, more expected participants, a spiffy t-shirt designed by Alex Willett, and even a new location. Due to construction on Walter Johnson's track, the races will be held at Tilden Middle School, about 3/4 of a mile away from Walter Johnson. The address is:
11211 Old Georgetown Road
Rockville, Maryland 20852
The middle school is on your right as you go north on Old Georgetown Road. Oh yeah, this event is NOT hosted by Walter Johnson or Tilden.
Once again, the extremely friendly, generous, and just plain awesome folks at Qdoba Mexican Grill are providing 300+ burritos for the event. So like last year, the money for every burrito purchased goes directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, helping to fight various blood cancers.
There will be four events this year, with a tentative time schedule as follows:
Frosh/Soph Race- 12:30 pm
Junior/Senior/Open Race- 1:00 pm
Elite 2-Burrito Race- 1:30
4x8urrito- 2:00
Awards Ceremony- 2:45 pm
Be sure to get there as soon as you can so you can get your burrito and get settled.
And yes, you read that correctly. After a one-year hiatus, the 2-Burrito Elite Race is making a return. On top of that, the word on the street appears to be that the Burrito Mile and Single Person 4x8urrito World Record Holder Andrew Palmer will be taking yet another charge at the record books, this time in the 2-Burrito Elite race. That's right folks, you're in for a show. Also, as a new addition to this year's event, there will be an awards ceremony following all of the races where various awards will be given out for things OTHER than winning (because we all know that winning isn't everything). As a sample, some awards that will be distributed include Best Dressed (or worst dressed, depending how you look at it) and Slowest Eater. To find out the rest, you're just going to have to show up!
The prices for this year are as follows:
$1 for Bottled Water
$10 for an awesome t-shirt
$10 entry fee (grants you 1 burrito to race with or just eat)
$15 to compete in two races/compete in the elite 2-burrito race
The rules for this year's event are the same as last year. The rules can be found at the following link:

Oh yeah, and finally, there are permission slips this year. If you are under 18, you're going to need to turn one of these babies in with your admission fee on race day. You can compete as long as there is a signature under "Parent Signature". There will be extras at the races if you forget yours, though.
So that's about it! I hope to see all of you on the 21st, so come hungry and ready to compete! And in the words of running writer George Sheehan: "It's very hard in the beginning to understand that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants you to stop and puke." (or something like that)
